FAQ

Common Sea Freight
Questions

Everything you need to know about booking and managing a sea freight shipment with Service Delta. Still have questions? Our freight managers are available 24/7.

Ready to Ship by Sea?

Our sea freight specialists will quote your lane, recommend the right service, and handle every document from booking to delivery.

FCL (Full Container Load) — you book and fill an entire container exclusively for your cargo. It seals at origin and opens only at destination. Best for shipments over 15 CBM, high-value goods, or time-critical loads.

LCL (Less than Container Load) — your cargo shares a container with other shippers' goods. You pay per cubic metre. Best for smaller shipments that don't justify the cost of a full container.

Transit times vary by lane. Typical ocean transit times from US ports:

  • US East Coast to Europe: 10–15 days
  • US West Coast to Asia: 14–21 days
  • US Gulf to Latin America: 5–12 days
  • US East Coast to Middle East: 18–25 days

Total door-to-door time including inland transport and customs clearance is typically 5–10 days longer than ocean transit.

Standard sea freight documentation includes: Bill of Lading (B/L), Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin, and customs export/import declarations. For hazardous cargo, IMDG documentation is required. Our team handles all documentation as part of the freight forwarding service.

Yes. We manage US export customs clearance at the port of loading and coordinate destination customs clearance through our network of licensed customs brokers at all major destination ports. Import duties and taxes are the responsibility of the consignee unless otherwise agreed.

We offer the following standard container types:

  • 20ft Standard Dry — up to 25,000 kg / 25 CBM
  • 40ft Standard Dry — up to 26,500 kg / 55 CBM
  • 40ft High Cube — up to 26,500 kg / 68 CBM (extra height)
  • 20ft / 40ft Reefer — temperature-controlled
  • Flat Rack / Open Top — oversized and out-of-gauge cargo
Yes. Once your booking is confirmed you receive access to the SDL TrackSuite portal where you can follow your container with live vessel position, AIS tracking, port status, estimated arrival dates, and automatic alerts at departure, transshipment, arrival, and customs events.
Marine cargo insurance covers physical loss or damage to your goods during ocean transit. Carrier liability under the Hague-Visby Rules is very limited ($500 per package or 2 SDR per kg) and often does not cover the full value of your cargo. We strongly recommend all-risk marine insurance for every shipment — we can arrange this at a competitive rate when you book.
